Course Description: Philosophers have cast differing visions of the beautiful, the sublime, taste, and aesthetic experience.  This course explores prominent theories in aesthetics in the modern and contemporary periods, with a brief introduction to the philosophical foundations in the ancient and medieval periods.  Students will ask questions about the objectivity of beauty, the standards of taste, and hte nature of aesthetic experience in art and nature.  Students will learn the theory and vocabulary that will provide the framework in which to meaningfully engage in discussions about aesthetics.
