Spanish Revival Architecture in California

The Spanish Revival style is an architectural stylistic movement in the early 20th century in the United States. Influenced by Spanish Colonial architecture, this style encompasses Mission Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival and Monterey style architecture. California was the major site in which design and construction of Spanish Revival style homes and buildings took place. Both Spanish Colonial Revival and Mission Revival styles were influenced by Spanish Colonial architecture, but unlike its immediate predecessor, Spanish Colonial Revival was more ornate with stylistic detail. The Monterey style developed later and is distinctive from the two other styles with its prominent second-story cantilevered balcony that often runs the length of the front of the house. This guide will help you navigate through various resources on the history and developments of Spanish Revival architecture in California.
