Visual Literacy: Introduction

Childhood and Visual Content

Being exposed to visual content begins when we are young. We look at illustrated board books as young children. Illustrations help us with our ability to contextualize the world before we can read.

As we become adults, it is crucial to understand how to engage and participate within a visual world and learn skills necessary for evaluation, informing, persuading, interpreting, and communicating. Just because we live in a visual world, does not mean we automatically know how to embrace it.

Below are visual interpretations of Ms. Sonia Sotomayor, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Both the photographer, who created a photo for an adult audience, and the children's book illustrator used visual analysis to determine how to best portray Judge Sotomayor. There are visual cues that are common to both as well as cues that are dissimiliar.
