PolicyMap: Creating Custom Regions

Instructional guide on how to use PolicyMap, a Graphic Information System (GIS) data and mapping tool.

Creating Custom Regions

You can create a custom region to cover unique boundaries outside of the predefined location selectors on the map, then build reports and download data from those areas.

1. Select the “Create” button at the bottom of the screen.

2. Select from the three options of Drawn, Assembled, or Radius region.

Drawn Custom Regions

You can free draw a custom region with this option. Zoom in to the map before you begin to make sure you can see the full area you would like to select closely.

1. Using the cursor, click on the map to begin your selection.

2. Continue adding points on the map to create the boundary. A grey line will appear on the map between points.

3. Close the custom region by clicking on the first point again.

4. In the dialog box, enter a name for the region and add an optional description.

NOTE: You can pan around the map by holding down the left mouse button while building a custom region or zoom in and out using the zoom bar on the left of the map as needed. If you make a mistake while drawing your region and want to start over, simply select the Cancel button from the bar along the bottom of the map, and then re-select Build Custom Region to begin again.

Assembled Custom Region

This option lets you select and group multiple geographies or locations. To begin, the map will display the predefined geographic boundary for your current zoom level.

1. Change the boundaries on the map by choosing from the drop-down menu in the “Select Areas on the Map By” window.

2. Click within a boundary on the map to highlight an area and the area will appear in the “Click Map to Assemble Region” window.

3. Continue adding areas to the assembled region by clicking on areas in the map. To remove an area, click on it again to deselect.

4. Once all areas have been selected, select Save Region in the window, give your custom region a name, and select Save.

NOTE: If you change the geography, your custom region will clear and reset.

Radius Region

This option allows you to create a radius (or circular) boundary around a specified address.

1. Enter an address in the “Specify Center of Radius”, specify the size of your radius and click GO.

2. You can also first specify the size of the radius and then select a center point on the map.

3. Give your radius a name and optional description and click Save.

NOTE: The small red icon seen in the image above signifies a custom region. Once you create a custom region you can also customize it by selecting the red icon. For more information, see this tutorial page.
