Most publications have multiple sheets. The Research Tools can help to identify the area or building you are looking for. Using the Index Map is a good place to start to find which sheets depict the area of interest. You can start by finding the site’s location on an Index Map, then identify the sheet numbers.
For example, let’s take a look at the history of the site for the BAC on 320 Newbury Street in Boston. In this example, we used the address search on the Interactive Map.
After choosing the map publication from the results, open the Index Map(s).
Zooming into the map we can locate the sheet number based on the section we are researching. In this case, we will be looking at sheet 39 (the section is displayed in green).
Going back to the main publication page, we can then scroll down to find sheet 39 in list of sheet thumbnails.
Zoom into the area on map you would like to view to get a closer look at the markings for the building. We can determine from this map that the previous building on the site for the BAC was a livery, which is short for livery stable where horses or horse carriages are kept.
